Cinder Waltz on the Desert Rails is an original video game crafted by Sonoran Switchyard in Tucson, United States, blending atmosphere, mechanics, and story into a distinctive journey. Our team is building bespoke systems and art so the world feels handcrafted, surprising, and deeply replayable.
Cinder Waltz on the Desert Rails is a story of redemption and automation set on a massive, solar-powered train trekking across a boundless desert, where the player's role as its engineer means that every small decision—which system to prioritize, which route to chart, which stranger to let aboard—sends ripples through the train's micro-society and across the wide, sun-scorched dunes, altering relationships and determining the train's ultimate destination. The project is centered on highly tactile and mechanically satisfying interactions with the train's internal systems, rewarding a player's diagnostic curiosity and methodical patience with repaired modules, optimized performance, and deeper bonds with the passengers.
We are scoring an adaptive, industrial-folk soundtrack where rhythmic cues and melodies organically answer to the player's rhythm of maintenance and their intent, making the hum of the engine and the strum of the guitar a unified song of journey and survival. Environmental storytelling is welded into every carriage; every passenger car, engine room, and rooftop vista hints at the world that was lost to the deserts, the fragile society rebuilding on the rails, and the risks of the wastes that constantly threaten to slow their progress. Our camera work is designed to be both intimate and epic, shifting seamlessly from close-ups of intricate repairs to wide shots of the train snaking through the dunes, all without sacrificing player control.
Gameplay is a continuous dance of planning the train's energy budget and route, satisfying traversal across its moving length to fix problems, and moments of narrative serendipity as passengers stories unfold and the desert presents unexpected opportunities or threats. Sonoran Switchyard prototypes the feel of every repair minigame and system interface weekly, ensuring that the core fantasy of being an engineer is consistently engaging and authentic. We are dedicated to a smooth performance on a wide range of machines, ensuring the Cinder Waltz never misses a beat.
