We install and maintain public refrigerators where anyone can leave surplus food and anyone in need can take it, no questions asked. It's a simple, direct way to share food and build community trust.
Food insecurity exists alongside immense food waste, even at a household level. The Community Fridge is a hyper-local solution that empowers neighbors to help neighbors directly. We install temperature-controlled, hygienic refrigerators and pantries in accessible, high-traffic locations around Seoul, such as community centers and markets.
The rules are simple: individuals, restaurants, and bakeries can leave fresh, packaged, or home-cooked food (clearly labeled with the date and contents). Anyone can take what they need, anytime, with complete anonymity and dignity. It's based on a foundation of trust and mutual aid.
Our volunteer "Fridge Guardians" check the fridges daily to ensure food safety, clean the units, and restock with donations from our partner businesses. This campaign will fund the purchase and installation of 10 new community fridges across the city, the first year's electricity costs, and a public awareness campaign to encourage participation. It's a tangible, immediate way to reduce waste and alleviate hunger, one meal at a time, while strengthening the fabric of our community.
Our mission is to create a city-wide network of food sharing points that reduce waste and hunger simultaneously. We believe that access to food is a basic right and that communities have the power to organize and support each other with dignity and grace.
Our fridges are equipped with locks for overnight security and are monitored for temperature control. We provide clear guidelines on what can and cannot be donated to ensure safety. We also host "cooking for the community" events to stock the fridges.
We prioritize accessibility and dignity, allowing people to give and receive without barriers.
Our team is a grassroots collective of environmental activists, community organizers, and food safety experts who believe in direct action. Our coordinator, Min-ji Park, started the first community fridge in her neighborhood using her own appliance.
Help us keep our fridges full and our communities fed. Your donation pays for the power, the maintenance, and the expansion of this simple, powerful idea. Support the Seoul Sharing Fridge Network and become a part of a kinder, more sustainable food system.
