We rescue, rehabilitate, and release native urban wildlife injured due to human activity. Our new facility will include specialized enclosures and a veterinary clinic for threatened species.
As Sydney expands, its unique native wildlife increasingly suffers from habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and encounters with domestic pets, leading to injuries and fatalities that often go unnoticed. Sanctuary Gardens was created as a compassionate response to this growing crisis and the urgent need for structured, professional care. Our mission is to provide expert treatment and rehabilitation to injured and orphaned animals, ranging from possums and birds to reptiles, bats, and other vulnerable species, with the ultimate and hopeful goal of returning them safely to the wild where they belong. Each animal that comes into our care represents not only an individual life saved but also a step toward protecting the delicate balance of Sydney’s ecosystem.
Currently, our operations are stretched well beyond capacity, as we operate out of a small and makeshift facility that was never intended to handle the increasing number of wildlife cases we now see. The demand has outpaced our resources, making the need for a permanent home more urgent than ever. This campaign will fund the construction of a dedicated, state-of-the-art wildlife hospital and rehabilitation center, specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of the species we serve. The new facility will feature specialized outdoor enclosures that closely mimic natural habitats, providing a safe environment for animals to regain strength and practice natural behaviors before release. It will also include a modern surgery room for critical interventions, isolation units for managing infectious diseases, and recovery areas equipped for both short- and long-term care. These advancements are essential for dramatically improving animal survival rates and reducing the risk of re-injury or illness once released.
Sanctuary Gardens is not just about treatment—it is also about collaboration and education. We work hand in hand with a dedicated network of volunteer veterinarians, ecologists, and animal carers who generously donate their expertise and time. Their involvement ensures that every animal receives the highest level of care. At the same time, education is a core part of our vision: we plan to host school groups, university research teams, and community workshops that teach peaceful coexistence with urban wildlife, as well as practical ways residents can reduce risks to native species. Through this project, we are not only building a hospital but also a hub for learning and awareness. It represents a vital step toward preserving the rich natural biodiversity that makes Sydney unique, ensuring future generations can continue to live alongside the incredible wildlife that defines our city.
Existing wildlife services are overwhelmed and underfunded. Many animals die needlessly due to a lack of specialized facilities and resources. Without intervention, we risk losing precious native species from our urban ecosystems forever.
To provide the highest standard of care for urban wildlife in distress. To advocate for wildlife-friendly urban planning and policies. To educate the public on how to live harmoniously with native animals.
Funds will be allocated to construction materials, medical equipment, and native plants for outdoor enclosures. A significant portion will also fund the salaries of two full-time wildlife nurses, ensuring round-the-clock care for our most critical patients.
If we exceed our target, we will establish a mobile wildlife rescue unit to respond to emergencies across the greater Sydney area and create a public viewing gallery for educational purposes.
